Questions to Ask Your Montauk, NY Custom Fish Tank Contractor

There’s really nothing quite like an aquarium. The colorful fish and interesting plants are captivating to look at, and the trickling of the water is so soothing; no wonder why you’re planning on installing one into your Suffolk County home. However, you aren’t installing a standard, manufactured, store-bought aquarium; no, you’ve decided to invest in a custom fish tank. You love aquatic habitats, you have a specific idea in mind, and you want to create a one-of-a-kind, aesthetically-pleasing piece that will serve as a centerpiece in your Suffolk County home, and will be sure to grab attention.

Yes, a custom aquarium is definitely a worthwhile investment; but, you want to make sure that the design and installation process goes as smoothly as possible, and that the finished product will not only meet your needs, but that it will exceed your expectations. That’s why it’s so important to take the time to inform yourself before design and installation begins. To help ensure the best outcome, here’s a look at some key questions to ask your Montauk, NY custom fish tank contractor.

What type of aquariums do you have experience with?

It’s important to find out what type of aquariums your Montauk, NY custom fish tank professional has experience with. Some contractors claim to do custom work; however, they really just install pre-fabricated designs, and while they may offer a large selection of options to choose from, it isn’t the same as truly custom. You have a specific idea in mind, so you want to make sure that your contractor will be able to bring your creation to life. For example, if you’re interested in creating a wave-shaped or an arch aquatic display, be sure to ask the company if they have experience creating these types of designs.

How much will it cost?

A custom aquarium is an investment and prices can vary widely. Several factors influence the cost, including size, shape, type, materials, and labor. With that said, it’s a wise idea to set aside a budget so that you don’t spend more than you can comfortably afford, and ask your contractor how much the design and installation of the aquatic display will cost. A reputable Montauk, NY custom fish tank contractor will charge fair rates, will stay within your parameters, and will provide a detailed, written price estimate.

What is your payment process?

This question ties into the previous question. Contractors can establish their own payment processes, and they can vary from one company to the next. It’s important to inquire about your designer’s payment process so that you’re prepared. A credible Montauk, NY custom fish tank designer will offer several payment options, and may even offer payment plans.

How long do you expect it will take to complete?

Like the price, the amount of time it will take to complete the design and installation of a custom fish tank will vary. Also like the price, the size, type, and style of the aquarium will also influence the timeframe; as will the complexity of the installation, and where you are having the display installed in your Suffolk County home. To illustrate, a moderately sized tower tank likely won’t take as long to install as an expansive bow-shaped aquarium installed in a wall.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare?

You’ll also want to find out if there is anything that you will need to do to prepare for your custom fish tank installation. For instance, if there is anything special that you’ll need to do to ready your Suffolk County home, you’ll want to know ahead of time so that you can make the necessary arrangements. If you’re prepared in advance, your contractor will be able to start working on the installation right away.

Can I see proof of your insurance?

No matter how experienced a Montauk, NY custom fish tank specialist may be, there’s always a chance that something could go wrong. For example, they could damage your Suffolk County property or sustain an injury while they’re installing your aquarium. If something does go wrong, you don’t want to end up footing the bill. That’s why it’s so important that you ask to see proof of insurance, and that you check to confirm that the policies are valid.

Montauk is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of East Hampton in Suffolk County, New York, on the eastern end of the South Shore of Long Island. As of the 2020 United States census, the CDP’s population was 4,318.

Montauk derives its name from the Montaukett tribe, an Algonquian-speaking tribe who lived in the area. In 1614, Dutch explorer Adriaen Block encountered the tribe at Montauk Point, which he named Hoeck van de Visschers, or “Point of the Fishers”. Two decades later, in 1637, the Montauketts sided for their own protection with the New England settlers in the Pequot War in Connecticut. In the aftermath the Montauketts were to sell Gardiners Island. In 1648 what would become the Town of Easthampton (first Maidstone) was sold to settlers by the colony of Connecticut and the colony of New Haven while retaining the lands to the east, from the hills rising above where the first fort stood (Napeague, New York) to Montauk Point. The western boundary of today’s Hither Hills State Park is also known as the 1648 purchase line.

In 1653, Narragansetts under Ninigret attacked and burned the Montaukett village, killing 30 and capturing one of Chief Wyandanch’s daughters. The daughter was recovered with the aid of Lion Gardiner (who in turn was given a large portion of Smithtown, New York in appreciation). The Montauketts, ravaged by smallpox and fearing extermination by the Narragansetts, were provided temporary refuge by white settlers in East Hampton. Many short but famous battles ensued. The skirmishes ended in 1657. Fort Pond Bay derives its name from a Montaukett “fort” on its shore. A deed was issued in 1661 titled “Ye deed of Guift” which granted all of the lands east of Fort Pond to be for the common use of both the indigenous people and the townsmen.

Further purchase agreements were entered into in 1661, 1672 and 1686 which, among other things, allowed a group of Easthampton townsmen to graze cattle on the Montaukett lands. While some lands were protected in the agreements as forest land, for the most part, all of Montauk was maintained by the townsmen as a private livestock and fisheries operation. As a result of Montauk being operated as a livestock operation, it is considered to be the oldest cattle ranch in the United States.

FAQ

The cost of a display aquarium varies depending on the material you choose, the size and shape of the tank, and more. A wide range of costs is about $750 to $7000. Costs increase with the size and height of the tank.

The best tanks are always large rectangular ones. Fish will live longer and healthier lives if they have plenty of water to swim in.

The cost of manufacturing and transporting acrylic is less than that of glass. However, a glass aquarium is still cheaper than an acrylic aquarium. The most popular aquariums are made of glass.

Most fish require room to move laterally (side-to-side), which is highly restricted by tall, narrow tanks. A tall aquarium leaves very little open space when plants and other decorations are added. Therefore, longer tanks are much better than taller tanks.
