Your Nassau County home should be a place where you feel comfortable and relaxed; a space where you can really relax, unwind, and escape the stresses of daily life. As such, bringing in elements that create balance, calmness, and tranquility just makes sense. Of all the different features that can be incorporated into the design of your home to promote a sense of peacefulness and serenity, a custom aquarium is, by far, one of the most effective. This isn’t just a matter of opinion; it’s actually a scientific fact. Studies have found that aquariums can improve physical and mental well-being, as they can lower stress levels, reduce heart rate and blood pressure levels, create calming effects, and can even improve sleep patterns. In addition to the overall health benefits that fish tanks can provide, they’re just aesthetically pleasing and can enhance the visual appeal of a home’s interior.
Whether you want to create a more soothing environment, you’d like to experience the numerous benefits that an aquatic environment can provide, or you just like marine flora and fauna, if you want to get the most out of the living habitat, rather than going for a pre-fabricated set-up, hiring a Garden City, NY custom aquarium company to design and install a tank for you is highly recommended. In order to maximize the benefits and ensure the best possible outcome, however, there are some key factors that should be taken into consideration before designing and installing a custom marine habitat. Below, you’ll find an overview of these factors.
One of the first and most crucial factors that should be taken into consideration before installing a custom aquarium in your Nassau County home is maintenance. Underwater habitats are living environments and routine and proper maintenance is essential, not only to ensure the set-up continues to look good but more importantly, to ensure the health and safety of the aquatic animals and plants that reside within it. It’s important to note, however, that maintaining a professionally designed marine display can be complex and requires a lot of time, effort, and energy. For this reason, taking maintenance requirements into consideration before you have your tank designed and installed is highly recommended.
Consider how you’re going to upkeep the display; for example, are you going to do it yourself, or do you intend on hiring a professional? If you intend on doing it on your own, consider how often and what type of maintenance needs to be done, and what the process entails. If you are planning on professional maintenance, consider working with a Garden City, NY custom aquarium designer and installer that also specializes in maintenance that you can hire to perform upkeep.

Freshwater or Saltwater
It’s also important to consider whether you want a freshwater or saltwater custom aquarium. There are distinct differences between saltwater and freshwater marine habitats, the most obvious one being the type of water; the former uses a saltwater system while the latter employs a freshwater system. Another obvious difference is the type of aquatic animals and plants. Saltwater fauna and flora is much more exotic in that there’s more variety, it’s more colorful, and it’s more unique; however, on the downside, the flora and fauna tend to be more delicate and both the living organisms, the water, and the tank itself requires more care. Freshwater animal and plant life, though it can also be unique and beautiful, it usually isn’t as vibrant and diverse; however, freshwater species are hardier and requires much less maintenance than their saltwater counterparts.
It’s important to consider what type of tank you would like, as the decision will directly influence the level of maintenance the setup requires, as well as the cost of the design, installation, and maintenance. While the idea of having a custom tank that resembles a mini Great Barrier Reef in your Nassau County home might be appealing, if you want to keep costs down and want a system that’s less demanding, a saltwater tank might be a better choice.
Another key factor to consider before having a custom aquarium designed and installed in your Nassau County home is the cost. There are several elements that will impact the cost, such as the type (saltwater or freshwater) of the tank, the size and shape of the tank, the type and the amount of marine animals and plants, and the materials that the tank will be made of (glass or acrylic).
As mentioned above, saltwater tanks tend to be more expensive, not only because of the setup but also because of the maintenance requirements. Additionally, acrylic tanks tend to be more costly than glass tanks, as do larger and more unique designs that are more demanding in terms of care. Custom marine habitats can vary widely in price. It’s important to set a budget before you begin the process so that you can avoid spending more than you can comfortably afford. A reputable Garden City, NY custom aquarium company will work within your parameters and will deliver a quality product that speaks to your taste and suits your needs without going over your budget.
Garden City is an incorporated village in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of the village was 22,371.
In 1869, the Irish-born millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart bought a portion of the lightly populated Hempstead Plains. In a letter, Stewart described his intentions for Garden City:
Having been informed that interested parties are circulating statements to the effect that my purpose in desiring to purchase the Hempstead Plains is to devote them to the erection of tenement houses, and public charities of a like character, etc. I consider it proper to state that my only object in seeking to acquire these lands is to devote them to the usual purposes for which such lands, so located, should be applied that is, open them by constructing extensive public roads, laying out the lands in parcels for sale to actual settlers, and erecting at various points attractive buildings and residences, so that a barren waste may speedily be covered by a population desirable in every respect as neighbour taxpayers and as citizens. In doing this I am prepared and would be willing to expend several millions of dollars.
The central attraction of the new community was the Garden City Hotel, designed by the acclaimed firm of McKim, Mead & White. Although the original structure, as well as that which replaced it at the end of the 19th century, were torn down years ago after a fire, a rebuilt hotel still stands on the original grounds, as do many nearby Victorian homes. Access to Garden City was provided by the Central Railroad of Long Island, another Stewart project which he undertook at the same time. The railroad’s Hempstead Branch opened in 1873.Learn more about Garden City.
The cost of a display aquarium varies depending on the material you choose, the size and shape of the tank, and more. A wide range of costs is about $750 to $7000. Costs increase with the size and height of the tank.
The best tanks are always large rectangular ones. Fish will live longer and healthier lives if they have plenty of water to swim in.
The cost of manufacturing and transporting acrylic is less than that of glass. However, a glass aquarium is still cheaper than an acrylic aquarium. The most popular aquariums are made of glass.
Most fish require room to move laterally (side-to-side), which is highly restricted by tall, narrow tanks. A tall aquarium leaves very little open space when plants and other decorations are added. Therefore, longer tanks are much better than taller tanks.
