You’ve decided to buy your first fish. Congratulations! Getting a pet is exciting, but it comes with a lot of responsibility. Whether you had a fish as a child or not, you may not know what to do as you embark on this journey on your own. Start by searching for “Find an aquarium fish store near me” on Google.
Once you find an aquarium shop in Miller Place, NY, you may find yourself overwhelmed by what they have to offer. There are fish, tanks, and fish food in abundance. It can be difficult to know what fish you need – or which fish you want – if you don’t know what you need.
This is why Fluid Dynamics International is here to help. For those who are visiting an aquarium shop for the first time, we have a guide for you. We’ve listed several things you need to know ahead of time.
Choose Your Fish
Choosing the type of fish you want to buy is more important than deciding what tank you will buy or what food you will need. Almost all of your choices in your Suffolk County aquarium shop will be determined by the type of fish you want. For instance, some fish are schooling fish, which means they are happiest when grouped together. In order to buy a schooling fish, such as a neon tetra, you need to anticipate buying at least six.
It’s also important to remember that the fish size you buy at a Miller Place, NY shop might not be the final size. Therefore, you should know how large your fish may grow. By doing this, you will be able to select the perfect tank for your fish.
Don’t worry if you don’t know what to buy for your fish. The aquarium service employee can help you choose everything you need for your fish.
Saltwater or Freshwater Fish?
Depending on what fish you want to buy, you need to decide whether you want a freshwater or saltwater fish. This distinction may not seem important at first, but it makes a big difference in how you care for your fish.
Angelfish, discus, mollies, barbs, and mollies are some freshwater fish. The clownfish, regal tang, and fire goby are examples of saltwater fish. It may seem cute to have a white angelfish and a clownfish in the same tank, but it won’t work.
Plants can be included in freshwater tanks, while coral should be included in saltwater aquariums. If you have a saltwater aquarium, you may need to add salt to your tap water to dechlorinate the water. If you have a freshwater aquarium, you must dechlorinate the water first.
Make sure you know whether your chosen fish belongs to the saltwater or freshwater category.
Don’t Choose a Starter Kit
Most people opt for a starter kit when starting anything for the first time. Typically, these kits contain only what you need to perform said activity. It is possible for a crafter to purchase a sewing starter kit, for example. Among the items would be needles and a few colors of thread, but not the more important aspects of sewing, such as a sewing machine.
It is a good idea to buy a starter kit for sewing, but you should never buy a starter kit from an aquarium shop in Suffolk County. Starter kits only include the bare minimum, so you won’t purchase high-quality materials. The components you don’t need may also be found.
When looking for “saltwater aquarium maintenance near me,” do not look at starter kits. Instead, ask the employees what materials will work best for the fish you plan to purchase. By choosing quality materials, they can help you avoid adding unnecessary items.
You can find many tanks at pet stores, so how do you know which one to choose? The most important thing is to buy a tank that will fit your fish. Even though you bought a betta, you still need a tank large enough to let it swim comfortably. You can call Fluid Dynamics International at 631-208-5302 if you don’t know what size to choose.
Whether you need a large, rectangular tank or a tank that serves as a coffee table, we have the perfect tank for you. Start your new life as a pet owner by calling us today. Find us online by searching for “the best aquarium fish store near me.”
Know How Long It Will Live
When you adopt a cat from aMiller Place, NY shelter, you know that you will have them for a long time. Therefore, a fish may seem more appealing since it won’t live as long. When choosing a fish, however, make sure you know how long it will live before you buy it. Some fish may live much longer than you expect.
The average life span of a betta fish is three years, and the life span of a molly can reach four years. In contrast, goldfish can live up to ten years. A molly is a better choice if a 10-year-old goldfish is too much of a commitment.
Will You Choose Only One Fish?
In some cases, people want to start their at-home aquarium off strong with just one fish at a Suffolk County aquarium cleaning service. When purchasing more than one type of fish, make sure you don’t purchase aggressive breeds. Some fish don’t mix well, and you don’t want your fish to harm each other. Find out which fish go well together at the aquarium shop.
Where Will You Put the Aquarium?
Tanks for fish are large, especially when you choose fish that are large or multiple, so you should decide where to place the tank before you start buying fish. Is there a corner in your home that seems empty? You might find the perfect spot for your new tank there!
Consider whether you want a wall-mounted tank or a stand. No matter where you want to place your tank, Fluid Dynamics International can help.
Miller Place is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the North Shore of Long Island. Miller Place has been inhabited since the 17th century and is named for the Miller family that included many of its initial settlers. For most of its history, the community functioned as an agriculture-based society. Despite preserving much of its historic identity, changes in the 20th century have transitioned the hamlet into a desirable and densely populated suburban area. The population was 11,723 at the 2020 census.
The land that Miller Place occupies was purchased from the native Setalcott tribe in 1664 by settlers of Setauket. The parcel also included what would become Mount Sinai, an adjacent community of similar character with which Miller Place would share a variety of functions throughout its history.
The first known dwelling in the area was constructed in the 1660s by Captain John Scott, an important figure in Long Island’s early history. This house was named Braebourne and features on a map of the New England region credited to Scott, who served as a royal advisor and cartographer among other occupations. This abode, on the eastern side of Mount Sinai Harbor, was one of three houses John Scott commissioned, and the actual occupier is unknown. The Miller Place Duck Pond on North Country Road
While the original settler of Miller Place is unknown, the settling of the region is largely accredited to the original Miller family. In 1679, an East Hampton settler named Andrew Miller purchased a 30-acre (120,000 m2) plot. Miller was a cooper by profession, and records indicate that he had emigrated from either Maidstone, England or Craigmillar, Scotland.Learn more about Miller Place.

A working fish tank is a complex system that requires a wide variety of different equipment to function properly, such as heaters, thermometers, filters, gravel, lights, air pumps, and more. A full-service aquarium shop like Fluid Dynamics can assist you with all of these requirements and beyond.
It is recommended that you wait at least 24 to 48 hours and even up to a week before adding fish to a new aquarium. Taking time to wait allows all conditions for the ecosystem to establish themselves. Your fish will also have enough time to adjust to their new surroundings.
Not necessarily. Filters that use an electric motor to move water, like hang-on-backs and canisters, do not utilize an air filter. In contrast, air-driven filtration devices require an air pump to move water, such as sponges and undergravel filters.
